How much is the global manufacturing industry worth?

Global manufacturing value added reached $16.83 trillion in 2024.

Manufacturing value added represents the net output of the sector after subtracting intermediate inputs from gross output. This figure grew from $12.3 trillion in 2013 to $14.2 trillion in 2018, dipping briefly during the pandemic years 2019-2020, largely recovered by 2021 to $16.1 trillion and reached $16.83 trillion by 2024.

EU Manufacturing Sectors (2024)

In the EU, food, beverages, and tobacco products is the largest sector with €1.08 trillion in production value (18% of total EU manufacturing) in 2024. Pharmaceuticals was the standout performer with 12.4% growth, rising from €234 billion to €263 billion, while electrical equipment saw the steepest decline at -8.7%. The EU's overall manufacturing production fell 1.9% in 2024, marking the second consecutive year of decline following a brief post-pandemic recovery in 2021-2022. Motor vehicles and transport equipment, the second-largest sector, dropped 6.4% to €874 billion amid ongoing challenges in the automotive industry.

Computer and electronic products posted the strongest growth at 6.2%, reaching $317 billion, while petroleum and coal products saw a dramatic 27.2% collapse to $149 billion. Overall US manufacturing declined 0.9% to $2.86 trillion, with traditional industrial sectors like machinery (-4.5%), primary metals (-4.8%), and motor vehicles (-3.0%) all contracting. Food and beverage, the second-largest sector at $353 billion, edged down 1.0% as consumers faced elevated prices.
